Fayette Area Coordinated Transportation system announces route changes

The Fayette Area Coordinated Transportation system will add stops for the new PIC/Head Start Facility, being built on Commonwealth Drive in North Union, effective on Dec. 1, when the new building is expected to open, according to FACT director Lori Groover-Smith.  That change is on the FACT Connellsville fixed route.

However, the stops will be reflected in the schedules that will be available on July 1, according to FACT operations manager Kim Renze, because the schedules must be printed and available on July 1.  The next printing will not be available until Jan. 1.

The change was one of several announced by FACT.

Other changes include:
  • The Brownsville Republic and Brownsville Express fixed routes will now refuel and download route information in the morning, rather than waiting until the evening, as in the past.

  • The shuttle will add a stop at Centerville Clinic on McClellandtown Road in Uniontown.

  • The Uniontown A fixed route service will be extended on South Mt. Vernon Avenue to Franklin Avenue with a new stop at the UPMC Cancer Center (the old School of Nursing) on Woodlawn Avenue and an additional stop at Target at 7:08 p.m.

  • The Uniontown B Nemacolin fixed route will add stops for new hotels under construction (Comfort Inn Suites, Holiday Inn Express and Hilton Garden Inn) in South Union Township (near Walmart.)

  • The Morgantown Fixed Route will be terminated on July 1 due to low ridership.  Renze said the route, a demo project, did not build ridership, except during bad weather in the winter.
(We) cannot continue to operate a bus route based on weather, said Renze.

Groover-Smith said the authority will received a total of $1,528,327 in operating assistance, with $744,071 from the federal government, $561,034 from the state under Act 44 and $223,222 from Fayette County.

Groover-Smith added $274,260 will come in assistance for capital improvements, including $219,408 from the federal government, $45,692 from the state and $9,160 from Fayette County.  She said the money will be used, as an example, to purchase three more small buses.

Groover-Smith said the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Goal for Fiscal Year 2013-2015 will be .005 percent.  She said it is difficult to find businesses in the county that fit the program.
